Camera Waterhousing

Behind the scenes of putting the waterhousing to the test!

ABOUT: As the name implies, an underwater housing for your camera is simply a waterproof case that allows you to keep operating the camera underwater. Usually, housings are custom-built for a specific camera model, so taking an expensive camera out into heavy surf can be daunting. And a voice in your head might say, "What if it leaks? I have had two sunken cameras over the twenty-plus years of swimming in the ocean, and both have been user errors (yes, my mistakes). Unfortunately, surf/underwater photography is not cheap. It's about 3x as expensive as regular photography, and as the gear increases in quality, so too does the price. Whenever I update camera equipment, I have to consider the housing available; I usually use Aquatech housings.

American photographer Jeff Divine once said, "Surf photography is starvation on the road to madness". So you really should be thankful that this strange, often slightly eccentric, sometimes officially mental, noble breed are so obsessed with getting the shot that they keep doing so even though they could make more money slinging burgers in McDonald's.
